History of Douglas Furniture ReclinersThe recliners came later but the Douglas Furniture Company has established itself as a source for quality furniture. Douglas recliners and motion furniture have gained a reputation for providing customers with a combination of quality and affordability.
At the dawn of the 20th Century, Chicago was a bustling hub of manufacturing and trade Located at the mouth of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, the city was a gateway to the West with lots of people coming and going. Libby and Samuel Cohen hoped to make a living by getting into the moving and storage business. The Cohens must have learned that there was money to be, not in storing furniture but in selling it. Within a decade, the Cohens had two retail stores operating under the Douglas Furniture name.
In the 1930’s and 1940’s, the pair said to have developed a brisk trade in dinette sets along with other items of furniture. While other manufacturers of the day built and sold tables with tops made out of porcelain, the Cohens built a reputation that endures today. Many folks remember the art deco style chrome and Formica-topped kitchen tables and it is those tables that put the company on the road to furniture fame.
In the 1980’s the company started to offer a line of recliners, eventually adding motion furniture. Selling through independent retailers, Douglas Furniture offers a full line of recliners, massage recliners, plus size recliners and power-assist recliners.
